Major Lessons of a Minor Digg - Part II

Randall McCarley

by Randall McCarley
June 20th, 2007

Last Friday I put out this post about Adsense tips that I picked up from an expert and by Saturday it went popular on Digg and del.icio.us. Since this was not the first time this site has gone popular I was excited but still in control of my wits! I had a lot more fun this time around, enjoying the rush of traffic and confident my host would keep up like they did last time.

Here’s the stats:

  • Total Traffic Increase: ~27,000 visitors in 4 days
  • New Links Gained: 40+
  • Diggs so far: 1,184 (and counting)
  • Cash Earned: $0

Ironicly, I didn’t have one single ad on the page about advertising. I’ve kept Adsense and other programs out of this blog to make it appear professional and because most of the people that see it are “ad blind” anyway and won’t click the links.

I’m re-evaluating that, now.

It seems everyone loves pictures so here’s a few “snapshots” I took:

Here’s the story at #3. I saw it at #2 but didn’t think to capture it until too late.

Ok, Mom, here’s how you know your son that does that SEO thingie you don’t understand is just fine. Take a look at the names on this list of current stories: MSNBC, BBC, Washington Post, Business Week, Tech Crunch, New York Times, W3C, 14th Colony, Advertising Age, CNET… wait… 14th Colony!?Another cool thing that happened is I sent the following note to my webhost, Royalty Hosting:

This is the second time my site has gone popular on multiple social media sites driving over 20,000 extra visits in a day and the second time I have not seen any problems on your end. Thanks for doing the great work you do. You all are the best.

The sent me an email asking if it was ok they use that testimonial on their site along with a link back to mine. You bet!

When things are good, they are really good. Thanks to everyone that voted for that post are that shared a link to it. You made my weekend that much more exciting.

Wow! That was a nice ride. You are definitely in some good company, too. It’s interesting to hear that your service held up. Smart marketing to write and thank them. I hope those links stay and bring in some regular traffic. I don’t have adsense either for the same reasons you stated. Did I hear it’s your birthday? Have a happy one…

Thanks Lovekills_s and Christina. Yesterday was my birthday ad a happy one at that!

Christina, I didn’t write to my host as a marketing move, just good business relations. The more they know about what’s going on the better they can help you out. It just happened to turn into a good marketing move. But I think you should always let your vendors know when they are doing a good job.
