How to check for keywords on a site

So you are starting an SEO campaign and you don’t know where to start. You could start with the How to Choose Keywords article but how do you take it to the competition? Here’s an easy way to find out what keywords your competition is targeting.

1. Look for the obvious

Check the page title. It’s what appears above the browser window in the top-left. Or if you look at the source code it should be near the top between <title>Keywords go here!</title>.

Look at the page headlines and text that has been coded to stand out. Headers, bolded text, italics, and underlining are all indicators of key ideas and key words!

2. Look at repeated words

Keyword density is believed by many to be a method to improve SERPs. There are many tools that calculate keyword density by scraping the text of a site and spitting out the most used words and phrases.

3. Check for backlinks

A simple link: check in yahoo will bring up nearly all of the links going to a site. By visiting the pages you can see what anchor text is used for the links. The link text is usually an indicator of keywords. Or just .

4. Get sneaky

Some services will let you track your competitors sites. Of course the information gathered is somewhat vague unless you can insert some code on the site… but URL Trends tracks the number of links a site has in various engines and also displays the keywords a site ranks well for.
